Sunday 6 November

• The President’s cup was won by Richard Nelsson

Saturday 12 November

• South Africa’s under water ice swimming record holder and former SLSC lifeguard, Amber fillary swam an amazing 104 metres under water in one breath. She swam the whole length of Tooting Bec Lido and then turned for an extra 13 metres. The water temperature was 12C.

Sunday 13 November

Christmas came early this year! The winners of the races were:

• Bernie Ward won the Jenny Kinnaird’s Cup women’s 1 width HC
• Chris Alexander won The Bother’s trophy men’s 1 width HC, a new trophy donated by the Ingamells brothers
• Emma Watson won the Sisters’ Jug  Ladies 67 yards HC, donated by Rosemary Beaver in 2021
• Ed Horn won the Burton Cup for Men’s 67 yds HC, SLSC’s oldest cup first competed for in 1908.

SLSC held two consultation sessions  in the Lido Pavilion on plans for a future development of the shallow end on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 November. More will be shared soon.

Sunday 20 November

• The Boxing Day Ice Bucket was won jointly by Gus Brooks and Andre Ingamells
• Dr Andy’s Cake Maker of the Year trophy was won by Emma Watson
• SLSC were the winners of the SLSC v Serpentine Gala
• The Lido closed for refurbishment at 2pm

• Lido closure date announced – it will close on Sunday 20 November for 9 months

Three trophies for todays race – 3 x 33 yds medley open:

• Oskar Stefanski won the men’s Michell Trophy
• Kirstie Boyd won the ladies’ Joe Blanchard Cup

• Hannah Sketchley won the Ann Hannaford plate 100yds H/C race

• Nick Kerrison won the SLSC Autumn Cup for the 100y yds H/C rce
  Nick Kirmatzis was awarded the Richard Jackson Summer Cup for overall Summer Points
  George Watson won the Bec Junior U12 Cup for overall Summer Points
  The Dolphin U16 Cup was uncontested

Sunday 25 September

• Great fun was had at the Scratch Relays with the mix and match teams. The President’s team won.

Sad News: Long standing SLSC member Ted Yaxley died today aged  86 years. He was an artist and provided monthly cartoons for the Club Newsletter for over 20 years.

Sunday 7 August

• Jane Lyons won the 1000 yds W Abb trophy
• Sad News – Ben Bennet died on Tuesday 9 August. His funeral will be held at Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium
  Stag Lane, London, England SW15 3DZ and afterwards at The Silkirk, Tooting SW17 0ES

Sunday 14 August

• Helen Oldfield won the 800 yds Peter Simpson Memorial trophy
• Sad News – Roy Wise died peacefully in his sleep on Monday 15 August. He was 89 years old. Roy was a longstanding member of the SLSC and a founder member of the Tooting Bec Lido Physical Culture Club (AKA the Cupboard Club).
  Roy’s funeral will be held on 6 September at 11.45 am at Randalls Park Crematorium, Randalls Road, Leatherhead, KT22 0AG. Followed by a wake at The Spring Tavern in Ewell village, 1 London Rd, KT17 2AY
• Summer evening swim training and water polo at the Lido have now ended for the season, the light has beaten us. We’ll be back indoors from 11 September.
• Planning permission was granted on 15 August for the demolition of the existing pumphouse and removal of existing plant, erection of pump house and installation of plant; new landscaping around pump house.

• Egg Sullivan won the  Plough Cup for the 400yds H/C race

• Francis Reddington won the Old Friend Cup for the 300 yds H/C race
• Three trophies for the Bank Holiday Monday 300 yrds H/C and open race:
• Andrew  Ingamells won the Doug Harper Breaststroke H/C Tankard
• Helen Needham won the  Alick Breaststroke Championship Cup
• Fastest swimmer was Graham Smith for the Parkside breaststroke championship trophy

Friday 1 July 

• Summer evening races
  Steve Rankin won the one mile Miranda Cup
  Gina Deave won the one mile Marina Cup
  Finbarr Martin won the half mile Doug Mann Tankard
  Sam Deave won the half mile Doug Smith Cup
  The one mile Supporters U16 and half mile Pemberton Cup U12 were uncontested
• Sad News – Doreen Fitch, Club Membership Secretary for more years than anyone can remember, died today. She was a few months short of her 99th birthday and only gave up the job of membership secretary four years ago. Doreen was a stalwart of the SLSC having joined before World War II. Together with her husband Bob Fitch, she was instrumental in saving Tooting Bec Lido from closure in 1979 and again in 1990.

Sunday 3 July

• Steve Rankin won the Bob Fitch Cup. Isla Young won both the Bob Fitch U12 trophy and the Children’s Centenary Cup for most improved swimmer of the series of five races.
• Planning application submitted – Wandsworth have announced the planning application for the upgrade to the pumphouse and filtration system at Tooting Bec Lido has been submitted to Wandsworth Council planners. If planning permission is granted the works could begin later this year.
• Wednesday 5 July saw the last race in this year’s Summer Evening Aquathlon series. Thank you to  Vanessa Yardley and all the volunteers who made is run so smoothly

Sunday 10 July

• Hilary Jennings won the Plunge trophy for the 5th time!
• Beatrice Dixson won the Junior Plunge trophy

Sunday 17 July

• Steve Rankin won HH Judd open 500y championship trophy
• Rachel Gardner  won the 500y SLSC handicap trophy
• Ben Rankin won the 500y U16 Committee trophy
• Freya Bucknall won the 500y U12 Thornton trophy
• Gina Taylor was the fastest SLSC swimmer at the Brighton Pier to Pier Race and won the Doug Smith Memorial Cup

Sunday 24 July

• Patricia Richardson won “Our Jack’s Half Mile” trophy
• During a 8 week course at the Lido with coaches Karen, Sarah and Thea, 28 Rookie Lifeguards aged 8 – 14 learned about keeping safe around water and worked towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.

Sunday 31 July

• Ashia Oozeer won the mile race trophy – her first mile at the Lido

Jubilee bank holiday

• Wednesday 1 June – 33 solo swimmers and 14 teams took part in the the Jubilee 70 width challenge, swimming 70 widths to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
• Thursday 2 June – The 100y Rose Merritt Bowl was won by Ann Brimelow
• Friday 3 June – The Once in a Lifetime Jubilee Swim was won by Lucy Neal for being the most regal and calling out the names of her 70 corgis as she swam. Thanks to all for your wonderfully regal costumes.

• Steve Rankin won the 200y SLSC Cup

Sunday 12 June

• Gina Deave won the 300y Doug Mann Memorial Trophy
• 35 teams participated in the Fabulous Midsummer Relay on Weddnesday evening.

Sunday 19 June

• Gina Deave won the quarter mile Buster Crabbe Cup. Buster’s brother Stuart presented the cup
• Summer Social a resounding success! – A huge thank you to the new social secretary team – and all those who pitched in to set up and clear away – who made the Summer Social such a success. Thank you also to our lovely lifeguard team who remained on duty till after midnight. So lovely to see 300 members young and old enjoying a fabulous evening at the Lido!
• RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week  – SLSC and our Lido managers decided to join in the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s water safety campaign and offer children from local schools the chance (for free) to learn about how to stay safe around water. 75 children aged 10 to 12 from Bishop Thomas Grant, Goldfinch Primary and St. Leonard’s Primary schools took part in sessions at Tooting Bec Lido  to encourage safety around water with trainers Karen, Sarah and Thea.
• Dick Whittington and his Amazing Goose – The Lido Panto was an outstanding success, performing to a full house on all three evenings, proving once again the SLSC is so much more than a club only for swimming! Read all about it here

• Alfonso Perez won the 500y Doug Smith Memorial Cup
• Emma Watson was the fastest SLSC swimmer at the ED OW Seahorse Swim 3.8km and won the Aquarius Trophy

Sunday 1 May 

• The Lido opens from 6am to 8pm until the end of August
• Today’s race was won by Liz Humphries
• Bank Holiday Monday’s race for the Ken Raffatin Trophy was won by Liz Humphries.

Sunday 8 May

• Today’s race for the Noggin Handicapper’s Trophy was won by Peter Georgiou
• The Spring Points President’s Cup was awarded to Angus Campbell, who just pipped Bernie Ward, Kirstie Boyd, Liz Humphries and Vanessa Cowie, all in second place.

Sunday 15 May

• The Scratch Relay races (where swimmers are randomly entered into teams, and the races swum on odd stokes such as doggy paddle) were today won by team Finbarr’s Mermaids – Finbarr Martin, Richard Nelsson, Helen Oldfield and James Brooke-Turner

Sunday 22 May

• First of the Summer Points races was the the 100y AF Brooks trophy, and was one today by Rob Hughes
• Wednesday 25 May saw the start of the Summer Evening Aquathlon Series

Sunday 29 May

• Peter Georgiou won the 100y C Rylands Trophy

Friday 1 April

• The Lido opened to the public today – a month earlier than usual. Opening times 7am – 2pm. Swimming will be widths for the month and bookings are now hourly.

Sunday 3 April

• Today’s race was won by Gina Deave
• At an interactive event Swimmers Just Want to Have Fun members “pooled” there ideas and hopes for when the Lido closes.

Sunday 10 April

• Today’s race was won by Angus Campbell.

Monday 11 April

• We are sad to announce Len Allen died today a few weeks short of his 90th birthday.

• Today’s races was won by Joel Rodker
• Easter Monday’s Egg & Spoon races was won by Andrew Ingamells

Sunday 6 March

• Today’s Sunday race was won by Nick Kerrison
• 13 SLSCers travelled from London and Dundee to Loch Tay in Perthshire for the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships, winning a scoop of medals.
• SLSC has a new website – you might not notice the difference but the management of the website is completely new.
• Membership renewals started this week and we are grateful to all the guinea pigs who trialled the membership renewal process and reported the glitches

Q: I have lost my SLSC Lido Access Card – how do I get a new one?

A: Email membership@slsc.org.uk and they will send you a payment link and re-issue your card

Sunday 13 March

• Great racing this morning at the SLSC Invitation Spring Gala. Out to Swim were the worthy winners of the Heron Cup. Brockwell Swimmers and Serpentine SC tied for 2nd place and SLSC a triumphant 4th place.

Sunday 20 March

• The members self-service cafe closed on Monday so that it can be made ready for public opening on 1 April.
• Duty Manager Sarah is back after a brief spell at Brockwell.
• This week we said goodbye to Duty Manager Adam who, after 8 years lifeguarding at the Lido is going to be an Open Reach engineer.
• Adam also won today’s Sunday Race – highest handicap and first home!
• Erica introduced the new Chris Stanton “Roll of the Dice” Cup. The di was rolled – the race will be 6 widths!
• Thank you to the 1,000 members have so far renewed their SLSC membership.
• Thank you to the 12 volunteers who helped clean the pool on Saturday morning
• At today’s AGM:
• • Margy Sullivan and Helen Needham were re-elected Membership Secretaries.
  • Will Silverwood was elected to the committee.
  • A link to the correct version of the Accounts balance sheet will be sent in the next e-newsletter.
  • Motion 1 was passed after a good Q&A session.
  • Motion 2 was not voted on but remitted to the committee for consideration.
  • Sue Manning won the Lipsey Cup for Outstanding Services to the Club.

Thursday 31 March

• The membership team are grateful to the 1350 members who renewed in March, making their job easier.
